A new landscape masterplan.
Acadia University is located in Nova Scotia on Canada’s east coast and has consistently been rated amongst Canada’s top universities. From its founding in 1830 up to the Second World War the University maintained a commitment to campus planning and high-quality architecture and by the 1930s had developed an attractive and well-planned campus with the support of funding from the Carnegie and Rockefeller Foundations. However, post war, development at the University became less structured or considered.
In 2000, under the dynamic leadership of its president, chancellor and board of trustees, the University embarked upon both a campus masterplan and an institutional strategic plan.
As a partner of his previous practice, Peter Richards worked in conjunction with the project architects, university staff and students to develop a masterplan outlining the long-term vision for the campus. The resulting masterplan has subsequently been used as a basis for individual building projects on the campus. This has included the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens, which have been laid out to show native flora types of the Acadian Forest Region.
