Gloucester Rd
Bath
A residential scheme located on a brownfield site within the Bath World Heritage Site and Conservation Area.
The project entailed the preparation of a landscape and visual appraisal and detailed landscape scheme in support of the demolition of a Harvester public house and its replacement with a new development of sixty flats.
The principles of the development strategy were based on an appraisal of the site’s visual relationship with the neighbouring Victoria Park and the disposition of built form, which complemented existing large buildings to the west and north of the site. The existing floodplain area was cleared of choking vegetation and a series of open-tiered lawns introduced for use by residents.
The design of this sensitive site was heavily influenced by the unusual landscape, with Gloucester Road marking the eastern boundary and the land heavily sloping towards the Lam Brook on the western boundary. The new buildings were configured to retain open views from the local park towards St Saviour’s church on the opposite site of the brook. The design also incorporated a parking court which was screened from public views with structured planting and by being placed at a lower level than the road.
