Ice Arena

International Sports Village, Cardiff

The entrance plaza to the Cardiff International Sports Village – forecast to become the number one destination for winter sports in the UK.

Located on reclaimed land within Cardiff Bay and consented in 2013, this project will provide a gateway to Cardiff’s developing sports village. A sculptural landform will be the centrepiece of the space; its acute angles designed in response to the geometry of the Ice Arena building which will face onto it. Elevated landform and lawns will define and frame the public plaza, while the outward looking faces of pre-cast concrete units will be moulded with naturally formed patterns, inspired by the fossilised tidal sand ripples that can be found within the local geology.

Beyond the square, tree lined boulevards will direct pedestrian traffic along key desire lines during busy periods.
