Ikea

Dublin and Belfast

An Award winning project using bold design to complement the brand’s famous colours and style.

The Richards Partnership have undertaken a number of projects for Ikea, including their stores in Belfast and Dublin.

The Dublin store, which formed part of the regeneration of the Ballymun district in the north of the city, was completed in 2008 and involved the design of the grounds and a 400m frontage along St Margaret’s Road. The planting design comprised bold, wide swathes of block planting to complement the striking colour and shape of the building. The scheme received an award for its design the following year from the Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland.

The Belfast store was completed in December 2007 and was the result of a rigorous planning process. Due to its proximity to George Best Airport, it was subject to the Civil Aviation Authority restrictions that required the planting be limited by height and its fruiting nature. This resulted in the introduction of a line of pollarded willows running the length of the store, the red stems of which form a striking image against the contrasting blue of the building.
