Little River Valley

A wetland habitat creation and enhancement project.

The Little River Valley is located alongside the Irving Oil Refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. As a partner of his previous practice, Peter Richards worked with the project sponsors, Irving Oil, and their partners, Ducks Unlimited Canada, in the creation of an enhanced wetland habitat. A dam was designed with a low, broad cross section which meandered across the valley so as to accommodate it into the character of the wider landscape. The overflow dam incorporated fish ladders, board walks and look out points for visitors and researchers to view and access the water’s edge. A series of trails were included and a new, 18 hectare, lake with boardwalks and bird hides around the valley where bird life could be monitored.
